Hiring H&R Garlick Limited - Expect The Height of Excellence...

The hallmark of true talent and dedication lies in diversity of achievement. That's certainly true of builders H & R Garlick Limited. Richard Garlick overseas three teams of qualified builders and apprentices in a family tradition so far numbering 45 years. Each team's capabilities are wide-ranging. They have clients who seek the practical realisation of state-of-the-art architectural innovation, others asking for quality character-infused renovations, and still others requiring a top team to manage large commercial construction projects.

Head of the business for the past four years, Richard is committed to building standards which spell nothing short of excellence. His own training incorporates the craftsmanship of joinery over and above his other building qualifications. This is a fantastic skill-partnership which sees him scrutinising both the big structural picture and the fine detail.  For instance, when working on a recent remodelling project of an historically and architecturally significant home, the Garlick team took great care during its partial demolition to salvage as many original features as possible. They painstakingly reproduced important authentic features like architraves, skirtings and window surrounds. 1920s character remained stunningly intact while modern comforts were unobtrusively incorporated.

Richard is also committed to the personnel side of his business. He takes care to place the right staff-member on each building project, to optimise all structural results for every client.

Richard Garlick - Pursuing beauty in detail

It's telling when a builder chooses a highly intricate craft for his hobby. It speaks of total dedication to skilled handwork, functionality, and precision.

What is Richard Garlick's hobby?

The restoration of fabulous vintage cars such as his 1912 Mitchell, and his 1923 Buick.  Other cars are currently works in progress.  Falling into this category are his 1914 Sunbeam, a Vauxhall, and a 'Brum' lookalike for his children. Other builders might choose more passive pursuits for their time away from building sites.  Richard, however, loves nothing more than thinking about design solutions, along with ways to optimise a creative project's finish.

He was twice the Antarctic Carpenter on the Scott Base maintenance team, selected from amongst a crowd of carpenters clamouring to go. On the first of these expeditions Richard was still in his teens, and newly into his own apprenticeship. It was probably the fact that he accompanied either his builder father or his drain-layer uncle to construction jobs from a young age, which has resulted in Richard's remarkable range of sought-after, complementary building skills.

The word craftsmanship is what drives Richard and his seven-strong building team. For instance, he relishes the challenges added by hill-sites, plus the exacting disciplines involved in realising innovative, exciting architectural plans. Equally, a passion for restoration, along with a foundational five-year background in joinery makes Richard's hard-working team an attractive option. He's often the first choice for clients on a mission to return old buildings to their former graciousness. So whether it's avant-garde modernity, an old or new character construction project, or an Austrian-styled ski-lodge in the mountains, Richard Garlick's builders have the ideal experience and expertise to deliver a quality result, on time and on budget.

H&R Garlick Builders assist their own building standards by personally investing in the industry training of their apprentices. They employ carpenters who will continually take pride in their work. They're also committed to honesty, good communication, and complete customer satisfaction.

"If our client wants something re-worked in a different way, we will do that. Sometimes a draughted feature on a plan has not been visualised adequately, but we will aid people in their decision-making so they receive exactly the house they'd envisaged for themselves," Richard says.
